I'm Kicking Myself For Missing the Are Paid Links Evil? Session at SES

After a week of talking about it, you might think I’m bummed about missing this year’s Search Engine Strategies conference. Up until quite recently I was actually feeling pretty alright about it.

That was, until I heard about the session called “Are Paid Links Evil?”

Now I am bummed.

After reading the Lisa Barone’s summary of the session I realize that I missed what amounts to an SEO conference perfect storm – Matt Cutts (from Google’s spam team), Michael Gray (Graywolf), Greg Boser (the feared Web Guerrilla), Todd Friesen (Oilman) and Todd Malicoat (Stuntdbl) all on one stage talking about paid links!

Needless to say, Matt’s views on paid links differed a bit from his fellow panelists.

I highly recommend reading all of Lisa’s post…but if you are too lazy busy, here’s some choice moments that Lisa described (they are not direct quotes):

…the FTC has said that word of mouth marketing is like any other kind of marketing, and if you’re being paid to say something you should disclose that. Adequate disclosure means it is understood by both people and the machines. – Matt Cutts

People and machines? Is this a Terminator movie or the real world?

Google is not the government. They have no authority to dictate policy to you. They are a for-profit company. He compares Matt saying Don’t Buy Links to Ronald McDonald saying Don’t Buy A Whopper. – Michael Gray
Google’s campaign is about creating fear and uncertainty and doubt. They’re trying to convince you that by buying or selling paid links you are breaking the law or being unethical. Google is not the government. They can not change your ethics. – Michael Gray
Google has overstepped its bounds. Google’s mission statement is not to tell you how to build your Web site. It’s not to tell you how to buy or sell ads. It’s not to tell you how to run your business. – Michael Gray
Google cannot ever come out in good conscience and ban you from buying paid links because they can’t prove it. Only the buyer and the seller know for sure. – Todd Friesen
Stop rewarding anchor text the way that you do (Google) and it will go away on its own. – Greg Boser

And finally, I’ll leave you with this video that was shown before the session…sounds like Greg Boser didn’t like it much, but I think we all know he’s afraid of Matt Cutts in puppet form…
