Consumer Complaints Decrease During 2005

The number of consumers unhappy with their insurance providers fell sharply 22.5 percent in 2005, according to a recent press release by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Although consumers cited delays, denials and unsatisfactory settlement offers as the top three reasons for filing formal complaints against insurers last year, it appears insurance companies are doing a better job resolving consumers' insurance-related issues.

The NAIC maintains a centralized electronic Complaint Database System (CDS), through which states voluntarily report "closed" complaints (those that have already been resolved). The NAIC used the CDS in coming to its conclusions regarding consumer satisfaction levels.
