You Ask, We Answer: Our Favorite Business Blogs

C'mon, now, Insurance Scrawl? A site that has all of four postings in 2007 just simply cannot be considered the second-best insurance blog. Certainly not over the regular genius that is RiskProf.

Might I suggest Perilocity, Workers' Comp Insider, and especially Mike the Actuary's Musings as far, far better options than Insurance Scrawl.

I suppose I should have clarified that our Agent Blog-Approved insurance blogs were listed in no particular order. :)

But yes, we'd all love to see Mr. Mayerson post a bit more frequently. Maybe we should give Marc a heads up to let him know we're talking about him... :)

Greetings, all:

1. As author of Insurance Scrawl, www.insurancescrawl.com, I'm complimented by being included in the list of "approved" blogs.

2. I am a bit distressed by the vigor of the objection to my inclusion by Mr. Lehmann, who seems to object based on quantity of postings rather than quality. I'll concede that I don't post quite as much now as when I started the blog, but Insurance Scrawl is a bit different from most blogs in that it is highly substantive and provides (usually) the broad context of the issue being discussed. My postings take me considerable time to compose and in many ways I consider the blog to be more of a private law review than a "what I had for dinner last night" vehicle. When blog-worthy developments do occur that I believe necessitate a prompt posting, you can be reasonably sure that something on Insurance Scrawl will appear. As an example, the day the Berkshire Hathaway/Lloyds/Equitas deal was announced, I posted a pretty long analysis of the deal, that was uniformly received as the best analysis of the deal (whether published immediately or after more time), so much so that the Financial Times quoted the blog post directly in an article on the deal.

3. I had a conversation last week about blogging and pointed out also that the advent of RSS also changed my approach to frequency of posting. When I started the blog, few people used RSS so I felt guilty if someone visited the blog via their favorites and nothing new was posted. Now most blog readers outthere either get an email subscription of new posts or, as I do, put blogs in an RSS reader (I tend to prefer Newsgator but there are many). The RSS readers pulls new contents from all the blogs you're interested in, so you just visit the reader and new posts appear automatically. This way, you don't have to go to the blog's URL and be disappointed or not by there being a new post.

4. At all events, I'm pretty certain that the readers of this blog (Mr. Lehmann excepted perhaps) will find the content on Insurance Scrawl to be useful and, I hope, insightful. My postings have been routinely complimented for their analysis, clarity, and usefulness. I invite any reader to judge for himself or herself, www. insurancescrawl.com.

Marc,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post a comment.

I agree that there's something to be said for quality over quantity. Although you'll find near-daily postings here at the Agent Blog (which I don't see as depleting the value of the Agent Blog—quite to the contrary in fact), I know not everyone can make that sort of blogging committment. I think readers can count on the fact that each new posting on Insurance Scrawl will be meaty and will teach them a thing or two about insurance law.

And while I personally favor a more frequently updated blog, I also agree that the advent of RSS makes it so much easier to find new content when it's ready for us to take in. Unfortunately it seems that, at present, the industry as a whole doesn't seem too hip to RSS. (If you're lost in the RSS sauce, read Jeb's post about it here).

At any rate, I dig Insurance Scrawl and luckily we live in a country where we can all have an opinion about which blogs we think rule the school. :)

Andrew Smyth does a great job at TheInsurancePolicy.com. I'm a tad biased though - I'm his editor. :)
