Hillarycare Redux

All of you agents selling health insurance can breathe a sigh of relief.

Because in the event that Hillary Clinton wins the nomination and then the presidency, her plan for overhauling America’s health care system has a place for you in it. A rather big place, in fact.

Yep, Clinton is back on the health care bandwagon, and she says she’s learned some big lessons from her failure, in 1993, to revamp the system. This new plan shares the ambition of covering every citizen, but it’s perhaps more pragmatic and less combative than the one she promoted as first lady.

Here is Clinton’s plan in a nutshell:

Not sure I like a federal mandate on insurance

Believe it or not, Aaron, you're in the minority. According to a July CBS poll, 64 percent believe government should guarantee health insurance for all. The good news for insurers is that less than a third believe that the government would do a better job than private insurance companies at actually providing medical coverage.

The CBS poll is seriously flawed as the questions were worded to achieve a desired outcome. (You shouldn't be surprised the drive-by media has a 4 to 1 Democrat backed voting record). Had the poll listed the restrictions, requirements, and added taxes the results would be against her proposal.

Aaron, no one favors mandates, as no one-size fits all. This is where we 'free market' agents provide our vital service.

Take a look at the current role that we play in the medicare (part D) system, where we are primarily 'order takers'. I expect that this would be our role if the Dem's get their way. But expect even more regulation from an expanded bureaucracy. Respectfully JP.

JP Drengler:
I am not certain it is flawed to do a poll of whether someone prefers one option over another. Yes, they did not list the restrictions and costs, but they also did not list the benefits, either. (When you look at the total dollars spent on health care in the United States on a per covered individual basis and compare it to a system, such as the one in France, it is clear that we are, comparatively, paying way too much.)

Do you have a poll from some other source that shows Americans do not want universal health care?

It is also worth noting that the failure of Hillary's plan had more to do with Bill Clinton than Hillary. As she often said, it really was her husband's plan, and the one she is working on now is her own.

That said, I am not a fan of Hillary and likely will not vote for her. My point is simply that we all need to keep an open mind on the subject so we can objectively address the issues. From what I have seen, there is enormous support of a universal health care system in the United States, and if there is any hope in stopping that momentum, it will need to come from realistic assessments of the changes.

What about the individual mandate for car insurance? Is there any one who is against that?

That particular requirement is in place because car insurance mitigates the damage of externalities.

Are there not negative externalities that result from people not having health insurance?
